Viet Nam wins medals from world chess for cadets

Viet Nam won one gold, two silvers and one bronze from the FIDE World Cadet Rapid and Blitz Championship 2024 which closed on April 29 in Durres, Albania.

The only champion was Nguyen Vu Bao Chau who triumphed in the girls' U8 blitz chess event.

The No 1 seed won all 11 matches to have maximum 11 points and top the table, leaving behind Alisha Bissaliyeva of Kazakhstan who had nine points and Eliza-Ioana Badescu of Romania who had seven points.

Earlier, Chau finished second in the U8 rapid chess class. She had 8.5 points after winning eight matches, drawing one and losing two.

She was below Bissaliyeva who scored 9.5 points. Nina Bos of Poland placed third, earning eight points.

Other medallists of Viet Nam were Nguyen Truong An Khang in the Open 10 blitz chess class and Nguyen Minh Chi in the girls' U12 blitz chess pool.

The No 13 seed Khang performed outstandingly to secure nine wins and two defeats to sit at the second position.

The winner was Roman Shogdzhiev of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) while the bronze medallist was Alimzhan Zhauynbay of Kazakhstan.

Chi placed third in her class with 7.5 points. She was behind World FIDE Master Megan Althea Paragua of the US who had 9.5 points and Varvara Matskevich of Poland with nine.

The result placed Viet Nam third in the overall medal tally. FIDE team was on top with three golds and one silver. The US came third with two golds and two bronzes.

The world championships was organised from April 25-29, featuring 375 masters from 43 countries and regions. They competed in six categories of U18, U10 and U12 in the Open and girls disciplines.
