
QUẢNG NGÃI — Quảng Ngãi Province will observe a two-day national mourning period from August 10 to 11 for Saysomphone Phomvihane, Member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and President of the National Assembly of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
Saysomphone Phomvihane, born on December 12, 1956, passed away on August 8, 2026, at the age of 70.
He was a key leader of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and made important contributions to the Lao revolution, as well as to national defence, construction and development in Laos.
He also played an important role in preserving and strengthening the great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic cohesion between Việt Nam and Laos.
His passing is a great loss to the Lao people and to the friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
During the mourning period, all State agencies, organisations, political and socio-political organisations, businesses, schools, hospitals, armed forces units and local authorities in Quảng Ngãi are required to fly national flags at half-mast with mourning ribbons in accordance with regulations.
Public entertainment and recreational activities will not be held during the two-day mourning period.
The Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Quảng Ngãi Radio and Television Station have been assigned to disseminate the notice through mass media so that agencies, organisations, localities and residents are fully informed and adhere accordingly.
