A solemn incense-offering ceremony on August 17 was held at the Temple of National Hero Trương Định in Tịnh Khê commune, Quảng Ngãi province, to commemorate the 161st anniversary of his martyrdom (August 20, 1864 – August 20, 2025).

Attending the ceremony were Y Ngọc, Standing Vice Chairwoman of the Provincial People’s Committee; Ngô Văn Trọng, Head of the Provincial Party Committee’s Commission for Propaganda and Mass Mobilization; Hồ Ngọc Thịnh, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Quảng Ngãi; along with leaders of departments, local authorities, descendants of Trương Định’s family, and local people.

In a respectful atmosphere, delegates offered incense and flowers to honor Trương Định – a legendary leader of resistance forces against French colonial invaders.

Born in 1820 in Tư Cung village, he later settled in Gò Công. In 1859, as French troops expanded their invasion in the South, he gathered local forces, established bases in Gò Công, and launched an uprising that won significant victories, striking fear into the enemy.

Despite the 1862 Treaty of Nhâm Tuất between the Huế court and the French, which ordered him to disband his forces, Trương Định chose to remain with his people.

In 1863, his troops honored him as “Bình Tây Đại nguyên soái” (Grand Marshal Pacifying the West). On the night of August 19, 1864, his army was ambushed.

Gravely wounded and refusing to surrender, Trương Định took his own life at dawn on August 20, 1864, becoming a symbol of indomitable spirit and patriotism.
