QUẢNG NGÃI — Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Trần Phước Hiền and representatives of provincial departments, agencies and local authorities paid tribute to fallen heroes at the Hill 1049 special national-level historical site in Sa Bình Commune on September 11.
The delegation laid flowers and offered incense in remembrance of Vietnamese soldiers and local forces who sacrificed their lives for national independence and freedom.
Located on the Ngọc Ring Rua mountain range at an elevation of more than 1,000 meters, Hill 1049 overlooks the southwestern area of Đăk Tô–Tân Cảnh.
During the resistance war against the United States, the site, also known as Delta Base, served as an important defensive position west of the Pô Kô River.
From March 30 to April 5, 1972, the 52nd Infantry Regiment, under the command of Major Hồ Hải Nam, together with local forces and residents, surrounded and attacked Hill 1049, gradually tightening the siege and forcing enemy forces to concentrate in a smaller area.
On April 21, 1972, the 52nd Infantry Regiment, reinforced by the 1st Battalion of the 48th Regiment and the 19th Commando Battalion of Division 320A, together with local forces, launched an attack on the site and defeated the enemy’s 2nd Airborne Battalion and reinforcement forces.
The victory enabled the Vietnamese forces to take control of Hill 1049 and surrounding high points, break through the defensive line and create conditions for other forces to advance and liberate Đăk Tô–Tân Cảnh on April 24, 1972.
The tribute ceremony at Hill 1049 was held to honor the sacrifices of fallen heroes and preserve the historical memory associated with one of the important battlefields of the Central Highlands during the national resistance war.
