Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Nguyễn Đức Tâm pays tribute to National Hero Trương Định
Born and raised in Tư Cung village, now part of Tịnh Khê commune, Quảng Ngãi province, Trương Định moved to Gò Công with his father in 1844. In 1854, he mobilized local people to reclaim land and establish settlements in Gia Thuận, Gò Công Đông District, earning the title "Quản Định".
When French forces attacked Gia Định in 1859, Trương Định fought alongside Nguyễn Dynasty troops and won several victories. He was later appointed Deputy Military Commander of Gia Định.
After the 1862 treaty, under which the Nguyễn Dynasty ceded three eastern provinces of Nam Kỳ to France, Trương Định refused the court’s order to disband his forces and continued leading the resistance. He was subsequently honored with the title “Bình Tây Đại Nguyên soái” (Great Marshal of the Anti-French Forces).
On the night of August 19, 1864, his forces were ambushed by the French. Seriously wounded and determined not to be captured, Trương Định took his own life in the early morning of August 20, 1864.
