Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyễn Hoàng Giang visits the factory
VIENNA – A delegation from Quảng Ngãi Province, led by Nguyễn Hoàng Giang, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, visited the Pfaffenau Waste-to-Energy Plant in Vienna on July 11 to learn about one of Europe's leading waste treatment and energy recovery models.
During the visit, plant representatives introduced the facility's development, waste treatment technologies, operational processes and its economic and environmental benefits.
Built under a circular economy approach, the Pfaffenau plant converts non-recyclable municipal waste into electricity and heat while meeting the European Union's stringent environmental standards.

The facility currently generates electricity for around 25,000 households and supplies district heating to approximately 50,000 households in Vienna.
The Quảng Ngãi delegation toured the plant's entire waste treatment process, from waste reception and sorting to high-temperature incineration, energy recovery and post-treatment of combustion residues.
According to the plant operator, the facility processes about 250,000 tonnes of residual and bulky waste annually, collected by Vienna's municipal waste management authority.
Around 200 specialised trucks deliver waste to the plant each day.
Waste is incinerated at temperatures of around 1,000°C, with the heat converted into steam to generate electricity and supply Vienna's district heating network.
The remaining ash is further treated and recycled into construction materials for environmentally safe landfill applications.
Delegates praised Vienna's integrated waste-to-energy model, describing it as an effective solution for reducing environmental pollution while generating clean energy and supporting the city's circular economy and sustainable development goals.
The delegation said the experience gained from the visit would provide valuable insights for Quảng Ngãi as it explores advanced waste management solutions, renewable energy development and environmental protection initiatives in the coming years.
Commissioned in 2008, the Pfaffenau Waste-to-Energy Plant is one of Austria's flagship facilities for sustainable waste treatment and plays a key role in Vienna's green urban development strategy.
