Quảng Ngãi’s response to Storm No. 5 in the East Sea

The PPC’s Chairman has issued Directive No. 01/CĐ-UBND on urgent measures to respond to Storm No. 5 (international name: Kajiki).

On August 23, 2025, a tropical depression over the northeastern East Sea strengthened into Storm No. 5. At 7:00 a.m., the storm’s center was located at 17.2°N, 116.6°E, about 480 km northeast of the Hoàng Sa Archipelago, with maximum sustained winds of level 8 (62–74 km/h), gusting to level 10.

The storm is moving west-northwest at about 25 km/h. From the evening of August 24–25, strong winds of level 6–7, gusting to level 8, are forecast over Quảng Ngãi’s coastal waters, with rough seas.

Inland areas may experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, flash floods, and landslides, particularly in mountainous regions.

In line with the Prime Minister’s Directive No. 141/CĐ-TTg dated August 22, 2025, the PPC’s Chairman has requested agencies, localities, and units to implement the following measures urgently:

Maritime safety: Strictly monitor storm developments, notify and guide fishing vessels to avoid dangerous areas, especially around the Hoàng Sa (Paracel)  Archipelago and northern waters. All vessels must immediately seek safe shelter. Passenger transport routes Sa Kỳ – Lý Sơn and between Lý Sơn’s islands must be suspended once winds reach level 6.

Aquaculture and tourism: Take precautions to protect fish cages, aquaculture farms, and ensure safety for tourists, especially in Lý Sơn.

Flood and landslide prevention: Monitor rainfall and flood warnings closely; inspect and clear drainage in low-lying and riverside areas; organize evacuation of residents from high-risk zones.

Infrastructure safety: Inspect key works, dams, reservoirs, construction sites, and mining areas to prevent incidents; implement drainage and flood protection measures for urban areas and production zones.

Information dissemination: Strengthen communication on storm and weather developments through mass media, ensuring timely updates to authorities and the public.

The Provincial Standing Office of Civil Defense Command, in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Environment and relevant agencies, should closely monitor the situation and advise the provincial leadership on appropriate response measures.
