Addressing the conference, Vice Chairman Đỗ Tâm Hiển highlighted Quảng Ngãi’s significant potential for forest carbon development, with approximately 881,000 hectares of forest, including more than 659,000 hectares of natural forest and 222,000 hectares of planted forest.

He noted that these resources provide an important foundation for emissions reduction and carbon sequestration activities, contributing to sustainable forest management, creating new revenue sources, supporting GRDP growth, and improving livelihoods for communities dependent on forestry.

According to the Việt Nam National Forestry Science Institute, forest carbon refers to carbon absorbed and stored within forest ecosystem carbon pools, including above and below-ground biomass, vegetation, deadwood, litter, and soil organic carbon. Forest carbon credits are generated through activities that reduce emissions and enhance carbon absorption.

Dr. Trần Lâm Đồng, Deputy Director of the Việt Nam National Forestry Science Institute, delivers remarks at the conference

The Institute assessed that Quảng Ngãi has favorable conditions for developing forest carbon projects through measures such as protecting existing natural forests, reducing deforestation and forest degradation, restoring degraded forests, improving plantation quality, converting small-timber plantations into large-timber forests, extending forest production cycles, promoting sustainable forest management, and developing agroforestry models.

The Institute recommended that forest carbon development in Quảng Ngãi be implemented through a clear roadmap based on reliable data and aligned with sustainable forest management objectives. Priority actions include establishing a provincial coordinating body, standardizing and integrating forest databases, assessing forest carbon potential, and selecting suitable areas for pilot projects before broader implementation.

Concluding the conference, Vice Chairman Đỗ Tâm Hiển emphasized that forest carbon development represents a promising pathway toward green growth, greenhouse gas reduction, enhanced forest economic value, and sustainable livelihoods.
